Coaches comments:

A terrific, tough win against Williamstown. It was the first time ever we have played each other, and the scene was set with a great ANZAC day pre-game ceremony. We started a little slow, and were wasteful going forward with a relatively strong breeze. However from the second quarter onwards, we showed our brand of footy which was highlighted by our contested work, and handball chains. We were unfortunate to have 3 injuries in the first half. The boys had to dig very deep, with limited rotations. The win was a very brave one, with everyone’s attitude and output being exemplary. Campbell Walker was inspirational as captain. In general it was very hard to pick best players, given the evenness of output. A very good problem to have. We take on the other undated team in Beaumaris next week, which shapes as another big clash.

Coaches comments:

The Collegians women’s team ran out against Elsternwick FC on Saturday, keen to back up their strong Round 1 performance. Following a short Anzac Day minute silence and ceremony, our women were ready to go. Collegians started well and, after an arm wrestle in the opening 10 minutes, were able to take control of possession and finish the first quarter three goals up against the wind. There were impressive efforts all over the ground. Mikayla Collins, in her first game for Collegians, was outstanding at centre half-back, with her intercept marking a highlight, along with a superb goal from the boundary 40m out. Annabel Schmidt played another excellent game forward, presenting strongly all day, taking great contested marks and finishing with four goals. Molly also had a solid game up forward, while Singo provided great rebound off half-back. We ran out 72-point winners in another impressive outing for our women’s team.

Reserve men’s:

Williamstown CYMS 4-3-27 def by Collegians 14-19-103

Best players:

Wilson MacDonald, Herschel Waters, Jordan Carroll, Jake Cotchin, Mario McKeown, Richie Andrew.

Goal Kickers:

Richie Andrew 3, Will Dean 3, Herschel Waters 3, Jake Cotchin 1, Alex Gebert 1, Jack Howard 1, Ben Meachem 1, Lukasz Payne 1.

Coaches comments:

We arrived at the Williamstown oval to find a strong wind blowing from the north, across an odd shaped oval that ran northwest to southeast. Our goal kickers from the first round had been elevated to the Senior side or were ill. Thus, the big question was who would kick our goals. We kicked into the wind in the first quarter and played a mixture of attacking and disciplined defensive football. We went to the quarter time break, two goals apiece in an excellent position, with a four goal wind at our back the next quarter. We took full advantage of the wind kicking 5 goals, 5 behinds to nil, to lead by 37 points at the main break. The second half was a repeat of the first half, good defence into the wind and creating many opportunities with the wind. It was an excellent team performance resulting in a very solid win by 76 points. The team received excellent run from Jordie Carroll, Jack Howard and Lucas Heriot out of the backline giving our forwards Richie Andrew, Will Dean and Jack Cotchin good opportunities. Cotchin was outstanding in his first game at CHF and the addition of small forwards - Wilson MacDonald, Alex Gebert and Oliver Andrews gave us the forward pressure we needed to create avenues to goal. The three tall backs of Kulang Kulang, Zak Bowes and Harry Stack, punched the ball away from their opponents, not allowing any marks inside the forward arc. The midfield was led by ruckman Ben Monahan who rucked all day without a break, Herschel Waters was in everything, finishing with 3 goals, AJ Walker crushed the packs all day and the exciting Mario McKeown looked like he had been playing in the midfield for years. It was simply a very good team performance and showed what can be achieved by a disciplined outfit.

U/19’s

PEGS 7-14-56 def by Collegians 11-7-73

Best players:

Arley Wilson, Will Johnson, George Teague, Nico Levy, Alex Elg, Cam Tassone.

Goal Kickers:

Nico Levy 6, Alex Elg 2, James Warne-Smith 2, Will Johnson 1

Coaches comments:

Round 2 saw us head out to PEGS playing fields where we began the day paying our respects with an ANZAC presentation. We kicked with a strong wind in the first and we created plenty of ball over the top leading to scoring opportunities. The second quarter into a stiff breeze presented a different challenge. We were able to control the ball and play some keeping’s off for the majority of the quarter and held a 10 point lead into half time. The third quarter was played much like the first and we went into the final quarter holding a 33 point advantage. The last quarter saw us defending strongly and in the end, take the four points. A great first win for the season.

Thirds

Old Scotch 7-6-48 def by Collegians 12-8-80

Best players:

Speridan Peterson, Jake Properjohn, Louis Jorgensen, Oliver Toussaint, Finn Wright, Oli Noke.

Goal Kickers:

Speridan Peterson 3, Oli Noke 2, Quinn Schwarz 2, Aden Castle 1, Fletcher Brennan 1, Max Daphne 1, Finn Wright 1, Isaac Wren 1.

Coaches comments:

Penny's Pandas continued the ANZAC day tradition of facing Old Scotch and came away with a comfortable 32 point win. Led by their captains, Richard Dell and Louis Jorgenson, the Pandas controlled the game for four quarters, despite windy conditions. The backline were outstanding all day and controlled the game. Finn Wright and Jorgy intercepted everything that came their way and Jake Properjohn controlled the play off half back. Oliver Toussaint and the mids were sublime again and were given great service by our rucks. Speridan Peterson was dangerous all day up forward and kicked goals at crucial moments. The forwardline put pressure on their defence all day with run and chase. Well done to the whole side on a true team win. Onto the next!
