Two premierships, two outstanding individual performances.

Across our Senior Men’s and Under 19s Grand Final victories, Kenny Ong and Alex Elg were recognised as Best on Ground after producing influential performances on the biggest stage.

Seniors - Kenny Ong

Kenny Ong produced a brilliant all-round performance in the Senior Men’s Grand Final, combining his trademark class with toughness and grit around the contest.

Finishing with 23 disposals, 14 contested possessions, seven inside 50s, five clearances, four tackles, five score involvements and a goal, Kenny’s influence was felt throughout the game.

Starting the opening quarter kicking into the breeze, it was Kenny’s work at the contest that helped get Collegians going. While renowned as one of the silkiest players on the field, it was his physicality and willingness to compete that stood out early. Several strong tackles created stoppages and scoring chains, helping the Lions generate opportunities despite kicking into the wind.

With the breeze in the second quarter, Kenny began to have an even greater impact going forward. After being involved in the chain that produced Collegians’ opening goal of the term, he was rewarded with a holding-the-ball free kick and calmly converted the second. He was then involved again in the scoring chain that led to Zac Greeves’ goal.

The third quarter saw more of the same. Kenny’s strength around the contest helped Collegians maintain field position, create repeat stoppages and produce arguably their best quarter of the game.

He then set the tone for the final term by winning the opening clearance. As the game developed into an arm wrestle through the middle stages of the quarter, Kenny continued to drive the Lions forward, creating numerous opportunities inside 50 and proving incredibly difficult to contain.

It was a complete Grand Final performance, with Kenny’s ability to combine clean ball use and attacking flair with contested work, tackling pressure and clearance strength making him one of Collegians’ most influential players on the day.

Under 19s – Alex Elg

Alex Elg was at his brilliant best in the Under 19s Grand Final against Parkside, producing a dominant midfield performance that earned him Best on Ground honours.

Wearing the long-sleeve number 9, Elg helped set up the victory with his work around the contest and ability at ground level.

His ability to get first touch at stoppage was a feature throughout the day. From there, Elg consistently drove the ball forward, gained territory and helped put Collegians in strong field position.

His first step out of congestion was particularly impressive. Elg used his evasiveness and turn of speed to break through the contest, find space and move the ball forward efficiently before getting to work again at the next stoppage.

His ability to win the football inside and then break lines on the outside proved a key part of the Under 19s’ Grand Final victory and ultimately saw him rewarded with a well-deserved Best on Ground medal.
