A preview to our Round 1 match up of the 2026 Season against De La Salle

Throwback: A photo from our 2015 finals match up with De La Salle

The Community Bank Malvern East Cup is back — and there’s no better way to open the 2026 season than a clash between two proud, traditional rivals.

Collegians and De La Salle have been going at it for decades, with the rivalry truly igniting in the 90s when both clubs were A Grade powerhouses. De La Salle claimed the 1991 premiership, before Collegians responded in style, going back-to-back with Grand Final wins over De La in 1992 and 1993. History runs deep — and it’s always close when these two meet.

Both sides come into Round 1 with a point to prove after disappointing 2025 campaigns that saw them finish in relegation positions. Expect hunger, intensity, and a real edge from the first bounce as both clubs look to make amends.

De La Salle have kept things tight over the off-season, with limited word on list changes. What we do know is they’ll bring a young, energetic side that plays with speed and intent — very much in the spirit of legendary coach Bernie Dunne.

For Collegians, there’s been plenty of movement. The Lions have bolstered their ranks with the additions of Sam Frost, Sam Parsons, Hugh Johnson and Sam Sofronidis, while also welcoming back Caleb Franks and Charlie Rozenes full-time from VFL commitments. Henry Anderson returns after an injury-interrupted season, adding further strength to the lineup.

On paper, it’s an exciting side — but that counts for nothing come game day.

If history tells us anything, it’s that games between these two are rarely decided early. Expect a tight contest, big moments, and possibly another finish that goes right down to the wire.

The Lions need your support. Whether you’re behind the goals, upstairs at lunch, or just dropping in for a quarter — get down and be part of it.

Round 1. Rivalry renewed. See you Saturday for a ripping day of footy.
