Coaches comments:
A very solid four-quarter effort against Beaumaris on the weekend. The first quarter was an arm wrestle. For most of the day, both teams had an extra player behind the ball, so it was pleasing to play a slightly different style of football and work methodically through it. Our spare was often Canny or Frost, who were both terrific defensively and provided plenty of drive in offence. Our ball movement was pleasing, knowing when to go quickly and when to retain possession and change angles. As the day went on, we were able to play the game in our forward half and were rewarded on the scoreboard. The midfield was dominant, led by Hugh Johnson in the ruck. Kenny Ong was incredibly tough and damaging, well supported by Bazzani and Walker. Will Oakley-Kerr played one of his best games for the club on the wing, showing terrific work rate. Matt Warren played an exceptional game down back. Jordie Carroll also put together a very strong performance as his confidence continues to grow. Scott Beilby was excellent up forward, competing all day and finishing with a well-deserved four goals. We're looking forward to getting back to Harry Trott this weekend against Old Carey, where we'll have a big crowd for the 2006 premiership reunion.

Coaches comments:
The Lions produced an outstanding team performance on the weekend, recording a well-deserved victory over Old Yarra Cobras. Leading the way was Best on Ground Sheldon Menzies, who provided attacking drive through the midfield while working hard defensively. Sheldon capped off an exceptional game by kicking a brilliant goal under pressure before calmly converting a set shot after the three-quarter-time siren. Despite the wet and slippery conditions, the women adapted well from the outset. A dominant opening quarter saw us lock the ball inside our forward 50 and create repeat scoring opportunities, resulting in an impressive five goals in the opening term. Irish recruit Alice Leahy was dangerous around goal, finishing with three majors for the match, while Ashton Cotton added two goals with some classy finishing. It was also fantastic to welcome experienced campaigner Molly Crighton back into the side. Molly made an immediate impact across half-forward, using her class, composure and ball-winning ability to great effect. Centre half-forward Madeline Marquet-Walker also produced her best performance of the season, setting the tone with her intensity, attack on the football and relentless work rate. Old Yarra responded strongly in the second quarter, lifting their intensity and turning the contest into a hard-fought battle. Our defence stood up admirably under increased pressure, with Ruth Sheridan and Mikayla Collins leading a resilient backline. The team regrouped well at half-time and came out after the main break with renewed energy, matching the intensity and pressure that had been the hallmark of the first quarter. Utility Isabella Warne-Smith spent time in the ruck and across half-back and continued to showcase her impressive development, competing strongly and making an important contribution around the ground. The victory was a fitting reward for the group's hard work, perseverance and commitment to playing for one another. It was built on every player fulfilling their role and contributing to the team's success. With a challenging run home to the finals, the Lions now turn their attention to this weekend's clash against ladder leaders Parkdale. It will be another tough test, but one the group is looking forward to as they continue to build form and momentum heading into the business end of the season.

Coaches comments:
We ventured down to the Trevor Barker Oval on Port Phillip Bay expecting wind but found it to be reasonably calm. Beaumaris took it right up to us and at half-time we found ourselves just in front. We had a lot of opportunities but could not hit the score board. The backline led by Cooper Brennan was on top, but we were finding it difficult to connect to our forwards. Again, Jonty McGuiness was giving our midfield ever chance, but we were overusing the ball. Sam Hibbins was moved to full forward to straighten the team up and it paid dividends immediately. Six goals, almost saw Sam in the best players. The message was clear to the team - "when you have the opportunity, quickly kick the ball out in front of a leading forward and as a forward two and three leads are required".
U19’s

Round 12 saw us host Old Camberwell at Harry Trott Oval in ideal starting conditions, with a dry surface and no wind. The match was evenly poised throughout the first quarter, with neither team able to take control, and we trailed by three points at quarter-time. During the second quarter, the weather turned and the rain began to fall, changing the game considerably. A simple territory-based style of football was required, and we went into the main break five points in arrears. The third quarter was our best as we gathered momentum and capitalised, kicking four straight goals for the term — a terrific return in slippery conditions. We took an 11-point lead into the final break. As the last quarter began, we were down to just two fit players on the bench, and it started to take its toll as Old Camberwell wrestled back the momentum. They generated multiple forward entries, and it looked as though we were about to be overrun. However, late in the quarter and against the run of play, we were able to clear the ball from our defensive half. This allowed us to surge forward, resulting in a match-winning goal from the forward 50 arc while on the run. We held a nine-point lead with 90 seconds remaining. Old Camberwell won the ensuing centre clearance and kicked a goal, but with only 30 seconds left, we were able to wind the clock down before the ball could be returned to the centre. It was a really important four points in the context of our season.

The Pandas secured a thrilling one-point victory on the weekend in a stirring team performance. Our backs were against the wall, with the side reduced to just 18 fit players by the end of the third quarter. Trailing by 17 points at the final change, the team responded brilliantly, kicking five straight goals while controlling the entire final quarter. Dec Waddington was unstoppable all game and willed the team to victory, while Zac Hines, who was thrown forward in the final quarter, proved to be the match-winner. Fletcher Brennan was exquisite, kicking three of the best goals you're likely to see at Harry Trott Oval. This win sets up a massive final three weeks for the team as they chase a finals berth and second spot on the ladder. Well done to everyone who played their part in a true team victory.
